Portugal D8 visa: remote work, income and documents
The remote-work residence visa has a specific basis: activity for people or entities outside Portugal. Check the income rule, relationship evidence and later residence stage.

Short answer
Article 61-B covers employed or independent remote work for persons or entities domiciled or headquartered outside Portugal, with relationship/service evidence.
Article 31-A requires evidence of average monthly professional income over the last three months of at least four times the guaranteed minimum monthly wage, plus tax-residence documentation.
This guide concerns the residence visa, not a universal equivalence with temporary stay. No appointment, approval, tax benefit or tourist-entry conversion is guaranteed.
A laptop and the technical ability to work remotely do not identify the immigration category by themselves. Describe the activity, contractual relationship and location of the person or entity receiving it. A job for an entity in Portugal needs its own analysis even when performed from home. D8 helps with searching, but documents must correspond to the actual legal basis rather than merely the label in a commercial proposal or somebody else’s successful application.

Article 61-B covers employed or independent remote work for persons or entities domiciled or headquartered outside Portugal, with relationship/service evidence.
Minimum income: understand the average and reference
The confirmed rule uses a legal reference instead of an undated euro figure. Organise professional income by month with corresponding evidence. Savings totals do not automatically demonstrate income from the activity. For different currencies, irregular payments or several sources, frame a question to the post using real amounts and records. This review establishes no universal gross-versus-net or exchange-rate convention. Keep those practical uncertainties visible rather than silently selecting the interpretation that produces the most favourable calculation.

Article 31-A requires evidence of average monthly professional income over the last three months of at least four times the guaranteed minimum monthly wage, plus tax-residence documentation.
Contract, services and tax-residence documentation
First identify whether the relationship is employment or independent work, then examine the documentary alternatives for that category. A generic letter about working online may not explain the relationship or service recipient. Organise parties, activity and tax documents without misrepresenting the contract’s nature. Tax-residence evidence requested for the application does not decide future Portuguese taxation or obligations in another country. Keep what demonstrates the current position separate from questions about what changes after moving and where professional advice is needed.

Article 31-A distinguishes an employment contract/employer declaration from company/service contracts or service evidence, according to employment or independent work.
Visa issuance and subsequent residence authorisation are distinct stages. AIMA describes residence-stage records including an overseas entity’s declaration and accommodation evidence matching the situation. Retain copies of the consular application and check current instructions before proceeding. An old reference to an electronic platform under implementation is no guarantee that every applicant can use it now. Housing evidence also depends on the basis of occupation, so ownership, rental and another right of use should not be described as interchangeable situations.

At the residence stage, AIMA lists passport, appropriate visa, overseas relationship/service declaration and accommodation evidence matching the situation.
D8, D7 and temporary stay: compare the actual purpose
Start with the real purpose: remote work, retirement or own income, and the intended type of stay. Do not automatically transfer temporary-stay documentary alternatives into a residence-visa application. Nor should an old visa-exemption or manifestation-of-interest cross-reference become a current tourist-entry conversion instruction. Where a special situation or earlier procedure exists, explain the facts to the competent service and request guidance for the applicable regime. Choosing whichever checklist seems shorter does not resolve a mismatch between circumstances and legal basis.
Illustrative scenario: an independent professional with several clients
A person works for clients outside Portugal and receives payments on different dates. They organise contracts, recipients, services and monthly receipts, separating professional income from transfers between their own accounts. This editorial example predicts no approval. If a family member will accompany the move, they also prepare questions about that person’s ground and evidence. The principal contract is not treated as one universal document for the household, and identical tax treatment is not assumed for materially different personal situations.
Final checklist and useful application resources
Before applying, confirm consular jurisdiction, modality, relationship, income, tax evidence and general documents. Identify the reference date for every figure and save the instructions followed. The tax/social-number guide helps distinguish identifiers from rights after moving, without promising automatic joint allocation. For later citizenship, read its separate residence and knowledge conditions. Neither a financial calculation nor a complete folder replaces the official visa or residence decision. Keep unresolved questions documented so the next enquiry addresses the actual missing information.
