Everyday Portuguese A2
Book a medical appointment in Portuguese: A2 phrases
Start with “Gostaria de marcar uma consulta” — “I would like to book a medical appointment”. Confirm the day, time and location before finishing. Below are translated phrases, an original dialogue and A2 exercises for rehearsing the call. This is a language guide, not a guide to SNS access or clinical decisions.

Short answer: request, availability and confirmation
Start with “Bom dia. Gostaria de marcar uma consulta.” Then say when you are available and ask which times are possible. Before finishing, confirm the day, time and location. Rather than scripting every possible reply, also prepare a clarification question for when a detail is missing or you do not understand a number.
The CEFR describes A2 through simple communication about familiar situations and immediate needs. That broad framework supports these learning dialogues. The exchanges are fictional and do not represent any health centre’s or clinic’s procedure. They are neither medical advice nor official language examination materials.
| Portuguese | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Gostaria de marcar uma consulta. | I would like to book a medical appointment. |
| Tem algum horário de manhã? | Is there a morning time available? |
| Pode repetir a hora, por favor? | Could you repeat the time, please? |
| É neste edifício? | Is it in this building? |
| Preciso de alterar a data. | I need to change the date. |
| Ficou para quinta-feira às dez, certo? | It is booked for Thursday at ten, correct? |
Vocabulary that changes the task
“Marcar uma consulta” requests an appointment; “confirmar a consulta” checks an existing arrangement; “alterar” or “remarcar” requests a different date; “cancelar” says that you will not keep the appointment. Choose the verb before calling. Saying only “uma consulta” may leave the other person trying to work out which action you need.
Also prepare “de manhã”, “à tarde” and “depois das cinco”. “Tenho disponibilidade de manhã” provides useful information without describing your entire week. For practice, note a preferred option and an alternative. Do not invent symptoms or personal information in a real enquiry simply to test your Portuguese.
Dialogue: request an option and check the reply
In the example, the caller accepts a time after hearing it and checks the location. “Há algum horário…” asks about a possibility without assuming a vacancy exists. “Essa hora serve” indicates that the option works for you. The final confirmation brings together the essential details in a short sentence.
Every time and location in this exchange is invented. In reality, you may be told there is no availability or to use another channel. Practise “Como posso fazer a marcação?” to ask what to do next. Do not copy the example details into a real booking or treat this dialogue as a particular service’s instructions.
Original example for practice
— Bom dia. Gostaria de marcar uma consulta. — Tem disponibilidade na quinta-feira de manhã? — Sim. Há algum horário depois das dez? — Temos às dez e meia. — Essa hora serve. É neste edifício? — Sim. — Então, quinta-feira às dez e meia, aqui. Obrigada.
Missed the number? Ask for that detail
You can understand the topic and still miss a number. Ask “Pode repetir a hora, por favor?” If you heard two possibilities, confirm which was agreed: “Ficou para terça-feira às dez, certo?” Do not agree simply because you recognised the name of a day. You need to verify the detail you will act on.
Practise distinguishing “às dez” from “às dez e meia”, or “esta quinta-feira” from “na próxima semana”. Write what you hear and say it back. If you cannot follow a real call, ask about a confirmation method the service offers. This learning example does not guarantee that SMS or email confirmation is available.
Change an appointment without a long explanation
To request a change, identify the existing booking and say that you need another option. “Tenho uma consulta marcada para sexta-feira, mas preciso de alterar a data.” Then give concrete availability. There is no need to invent a lengthy story for this exercise. The key is to distinguish the current appointment from a new possibility.
In the second model, the caller asks whether a morning time remains possible. “É possível…?” is a question, not confirmation that a change has happened. Finish by checking whether the old appointment has been replaced and what the new arrangement is. Change and cancellation rules depend on the service; these phrases do not establish them.
Original example for practice
Bom dia. Tenho uma consulta marcada para sexta-feira às nove horas, mas preciso de alterar a data. É possível marcar para outra manhã? Tenho disponibilidade na segunda e na quarta-feira.
Exercise with answers: what was offered?
Read: “Não temos terça-feira de manhã. Há uma possibilidade na quarta-feira às quinze horas.” Which option is offered? Wednesday at fifteen hundred, not Tuesday. How could you accept and confirm it? One answer is “Quarta-feira às quinze horas serve. Pode confirmar o local?” Another clear formulation can work too.
Now you heard “A consulta é às nove e meia” but wrote nine o’clock. Correct the note and ask “Às nove e meia, certo?” Finally write a request to move a Monday appointment to another morning. Identify the existing booking first; do not announce a new date before the other person confirms it.
Practise the call in two stages
First read the dialogue and replace the days, times and location. Then ask a partner to choose a reply without showing you. Make the fictional call, request a clarification and finish by confirming the details. Use invented names: the purpose is practising communication, not collecting health information.
Open the changing-an-appointment audio to distinguish the original time from the proposed alternative. Its context differs, but you can reuse the communication skill. In general A2 practice, review explanations about numbers and requests. A correct multiple-choice answer alone does not demonstrate that you can manage a real telephone call.
The CEFR describes A2 as simple, direct communication in routine tasks on familiar matters and simple descriptions of personal background and immediate needs.
