Short answer: identify the subject and request an action

In an initial message, say who is writing and identify the subject. Then request something answerable: confirmation of a meeting, clarification of materials or a contact name. You do not need your complete family history to ask when an event starts. Include only information needed for the actual question you are asking.

The CEFR’s general A2 description includes simple exchanges about familiar matters. These examples are editorial applications using fictional characters. For practice, do not place real children’s names, photographs or documents in a public conversation. An invented name allows the same language function to be rehearsed without changing its difficulty.

Short answer: identify the subject and request an action
PortugueseMeaning
Gostaria de marcar uma reunião.I would like to arrange a meeting.
Que material é preciso levar? What materials need to be brought?
Refere-se ao caderno de português?Do you mean the Portuguese notebook?
Confirmo a minha presença na reunião.I confirm that I will attend the meeting.
Pode indicar-me onde fica a sala quatro?Could you tell me where room four is?

First contact: greeting and subject

“Bom dia, professora” or “Bom dia, professor” can begin an enquiry. Adapt the greeting when you know the person’s name and the school’s usual form of address. Use a specific subject such as “Pedido de reunião” rather than a vague word. Finish with the character’s name so that the recipient knows who is writing.

The first model asks about availability without claiming that a meeting slot exists. “Seria possível marcar…” proposes an arrangement. A reply may direct you to someone else or suggest another time. In practice, ask a partner to invent that response so you rehearse an exchange rather than only sending one isolated message.

Original example for practice

Check what the message actually asks you to do

Imagine this notice: “Reunião na quinta-feira, às 18h, na sala 4. Confirmar presença até terça-feira.” There is an event date and a response deadline. Do not mistake Tuesday for the meeting day. First identify who should do what, then note the time and location of the event itself.

If you can only reply later, state your question explicitly. The example establishes no school policy about late replies. To understand a notice, separating published information from an unconfirmed possibility matters more than recognising every word. Find the exact phrase supporting each answer before deciding what the message requires.

Ask about materials without guessing

“Que material é preciso levar?” requests a list. “É para amanhã?” checks the date. If a message says “trazer o caderno” but the fictional situation includes several notebooks, ask “Refere-se ao caderno de português?” This is more informative than a vague “I didn’t understand” that leaves the teacher identifying your uncertainty.

Also practise a reformulation: “Então, é preciso levar o caderno e uma caneta, certo?” Keep the items you heard rather than adding objects by assumption. During review, have a partner compare the original notice and your sentence. Every item, date and room in this article belongs to a learning example, not a real school.

Original example for practice

Bom dia. Na mensagem é pedido um caderno para a atividade de sexta-feira. Refere-se ao caderno de português? É preciso levar também algum livro? Obrigada pelo esclarecimento.

Exercise with answers: respond to the notice

For the earlier fictional notice, when is the meeting? Thursday at eighteen hundred. When is confirmation requested by? Tuesday. One answer is “Bom dia. Confirmo a minha presença na reunião de quinta-feira, às dezoito horas.” If asking about the location, do not overlook the part already identifying room 4.

Now change the problem: you do not know where room 4 is. Write “Pode indicar-me onde fica a sala 4?” This requests directions rather than a room change. Compare “A reunião mudou de sala?” That asks something different. Rehearse the distinction so you do not get a correct reply to a question you did not intend.

From a written message to a conversation

Read the model, hide it and make the same request aloud. Your partner chooses a day and asks you to confirm the time. Swap roles. Work on one purpose at a time: requesting a meeting, checking materials or confirming directions. Add detail only when the main intention remains comprehensible to the listener.

The changing-an-appointment audio helps distinguish an original arrangement from a new proposal. Its setting is not a school, but the communication function can be reused. Compare recipients with the language-school email guide too. These tasks explain no school procedures and certify no language level; they offer complementary opportunities to practise.
