Short answer: destination, journey type and missing information

A clear request identifies the destination and whether you want one-way or return travel. Then ask what is missing: a time, whether you need to change trains or the departure track. You need not repeat every question when the other person has already supplied the information. Listen and confirm the detail needed for your next action.

This guide practises station language. It provides no prices, ticket conditions, discounts or delay-related rights. The table gives original learning phrases whose meaning depends on context. When travelling, consult current operator and station information rather than using the invented numbers in this article as if they were a timetable.

Short answer: destination, journey type and missing information
PortugueseMeaning
Queria um bilhete de ida para…I would like a one-way ticket to…
É preciso mudar de comboio?Do I need to change trains?
A que horas parte? What time does it depart?
A que horas chega? What time does it arrive?
De que linha sai?Which track does it leave from?
Pode repetir o número da linha?Could you repeat the track number?

Ask for a ticket with a simple request

“Queria um bilhete de ida para…” requests a one-way journey; “ida e volta” includes a return. In the dialogue, the employee asks about the date and the character specifies travel that day. Practise with an invented destination and give the necessary information without adding conditions that have not been requested.

“Há algum comboio direto?” and “É preciso mudar de comboio?” clarify the route. The fictional answer establishes no real connection between places. After listening, restate your understanding: whether a change is needed, where and what happens next. Recognising a destination name alone does not demonstrate that you understood whether the service is direct.

Original example for practice

— Bom dia. — Obrigado. Pode repetir a hora de partida?

Departure and arrival: do not retain only a number

“A que horas parte?” asks when the train leaves; “a que horas chega?” asks when it reaches the destination in context. If you hear two times, identify each function before writing them down. A correct answer to a different question may leave you with the wrong number even when you understand the individual words.

Imagine departure at seventeen twenty and arrival at eighteen oh five. The first is not the arrival. Use two notebook columns to record them. If “previsto” appears, retain that qualification rather than turning an estimate into a guarantee. The task practises comprehension, not prediction of real train movements or operational conditions.

A track change: identify the new information

In the invented announcement, track four replaces track two. The character should confirm the new detail rather than retain only the first number heard. “Linha” here refers to the departure track; the word can have other meanings elsewhere. Ask about the precise location if the indication is still insufficient to find it.

Use “Pode repetir o número da linha?” or “Onde fica a linha quatro?” The first requests a number, the second directions. Change numbers during practice instead of memorising four as a universal answer. Do not follow these example details at a station: the whole situation was constructed for understanding a change in an announcement.

Original example for practice

— Linha quatro. — Onde fica a linha quatro?

Exercise with answers: choose the next question

Asked for arrival, answer eighteen oh five; asked for departure, seventeen twenty. Both the place and connection are fictional. Explain which word distinguishes the two requests before selecting a number from the information you have read.

Which track is indicated? Four. If you do not know where it is, ask “Onde fica a linha quatro?” Asking “A que horas parte?” will not resolve that uncertainty about location. Choose a question that actually lets the character continue the task.

Partner practice and comprehension tasks

One person invents a destination, departure, arrival and track. The other requests a ticket, asks two questions and confirms the details. Change only the track and repeat the confirmation. Use a written key to compare the original information with what was recorded. Begin slowly and increase variety after the different functions are clear.

The getting-to-the-library audio practises directions elsewhere. It supports asking about a route but is not a railway announcement. Combine time exercises and notice reading with general A2 practice. CEFR and Camões support the educational framework; examples, dialogues and answers are ours and have no value as operational travel information.
