How to talk about yesterday in Portuguese: past-tense A2 practice
Can you describe your routine but freeze at “O que fez ontem?” Start with a few completed actions, a clear order and time expressions. This guide introduces a limited practice of the pretérito perfeito. It does not explain every past-tense use or define an official A2 syllabus.

Say when something happened, give two or three actions and add one useful detail. “Ontem trabalhei de manhã. Depois almocei em casa e fui à biblioteca.” The sequence communicates an experience without requiring a long narrative. It is a practice suggestion: there is no compulsory sentence count here for demonstrating a language level.
The CEFR A2 descriptor refers to simple communication about familiar matters and descriptions of personal background. This provides a broad reason to work with everyday situations; it does not supply an official verb list for this article. The grammar examples, exercises and answers below are original editorial materials, separate from official sources and certification examinations.
Confirmed by official source
The CEFR describes A2 as simple, direct communication in routine tasks on familiar matters and simple descriptions of personal background and immediate needs.
A present routine versus a completed action yesterday
Compare “Todos os dias trabalho de manhã” with “Ontem trabalhei de manhã”. The first describes a routine; the second presents a completed action in a past period. “Ontem”, “no sábado passado” and “na semana passada” help locate the situation. They are not an automatic rule requiring the same tense in every sentence containing them.
For this first exercise, focus on completed events. Earlier habits and background descriptions also involve the imperfect, as in “Quando era criança, vivia em Lisboa”. That contrast deserves separate study. Do not try replacing every verb in every story with the pretérito perfeito: what you mean and the surrounding context matter too.
First person: begin with verbs you actually use
The regular verbs shown here let you say what you did in the first-person singular: trabalhar → trabalhei; comer → comi; abrir → abri. Begin with three or four verbs connected to your life. “Trabalhei”, “estudei” and “almocei” may be more useful in an initial conversation than a long list of unfamiliar words.
An infinitive does not let you predict every verb because irregular forms exist. Learn each form in a short sentence and check it when unsure. The example can leave “eu” unstated. Initially keep the same person throughout; switching to “nós” requires different verb forms, not merely a different pronoun before the same ending.
Original example for practice
Ontem trabalhei em casa. Almocei às treze horas. À tarde abri o livro e estudei português.
Four useful forms: fui, fiz, tive and estive
“Fui ao supermercado” describes going somewhere; “Fiz o jantar” reports an action; “Tive uma reunião” reports a commitment; “Estive em casa” places someone at home during a period. In other contexts, “fui” can also be a form of ser. Read the complete sentence rather than translating the word in isolation.
Compare “fui à escola” with “estive na escola”: one highlights going to school, while the other highlights being there. For this practice, choose the information you actually want to convey. You do not need all four verbs in every answer. A simple meaningful sentence is more useful than unrelated difficult forms placed next to one another.
Connect the actions and answer a follow-up question
Use “primeiro”, “depois” and “à noite” to guide the listener. Add “com um colega”, “em casa” or “de autocarro” when the detail is useful. Every answer need not become a complete story. Read the example, cover it and retell the day with one change: another place, person or activity.
Then invite a partner to ask “A que horas chegou?” or “Com quem almoçou?” If a word is missing, reformulate or ask for help. Practising a short meaningful exchange is more useful than memorising a monologue. Recording yourself can reveal omitted details, but it cannot assess interaction with another person on its own.
Original example for practice
Ontem fui à biblioteca de manhã. Depois almocei com um colega. À tarde trabalhei em casa. À noite fiz o jantar e telefonei a uma amiga.
Exercise with answers: complete and explain
Complete in the first person: “Ontem eu ___ de manhã” (trabalhar); “Depois ___ uma sopa” (comer); “À tarde ___ à biblioteca” (ir); “À noite ___ em casa” (estar). The answers are trabalhei, comi, fui and estive. This selected context presents completed actions or situations, rather than testing every possible use of past tenses.
Now correct “Ontem eu trabalhar em casa”. One answer is “Ontem trabalhei em casa”. The problem is not the missing “eu”: the original lacks a conjugated verb. Add a second sentence of your own and read both aloud. Do not change everything at once: check the verb first, then the sequence and the information communicated.
A short task to use what you learned
Write four sentences about an invented day. Include a time expression, two actions and a place. Then retell it without reading and invite an unexpected question. If you get stuck, shorten the sentence and try again. You do not need to disclose private experiences to practise vocabulary and verb forms.
In the free A2 exercises, read explanations and record a sentence you can adapt. Use the writing guide to turn your account into a message. The course enquiry audio adds practice in understanding and asking for information, complementing the production work here. None of these results certifies your level or predicts a CIPLE examination mark.
