Short answer: reason, contrast or result?

Do not choose a connector simply because it fits between two sentences. First decide what you want to communicate. Porque gives a reason here, mas presents a contrast, and por isso introduces the result of the previous situation. The same words about tiredness can form different messages. Read the whole exchange and ask what the recipient understands will happen as a result.

This guide covers frequent uses in short texts rather than every conjunction or every possible meaning of these expressions. The table is a starting point. Do not turn the examples into universal templates: the relationship needs to make sense in context. Replace a connector and check whether the character’s plan stays the same or now communicates a different decision to the person reading.

Short answer: reason, contrast or result?
PortugueseMeaning
Fico em casa porque estou cansado.I am staying home because I am tired.
Estou cansado, mas vou à aula.I am tired, but I am going to class.
Estou cansado, por isso fico em casa.I am tired, so I am staying home.
Quero ir, mas hoje não posso.I want to go, but I cannot today.
Vou estudar amanhã porque hoje saio tarde.I will study tomorrow because I finish late today.
Hoje saio tarde. Por isso, vou estudar amanhã.I finish late today. So I will study tomorrow.

Porque: add the reason for an action

In “Vou de autocarro porque está a chover”, the second part explains the transport choice. The implied question is “Por que razão vais de autocarro?” The cause follows the action in this example. Start with that arrangement while checking that the explanation actually supplies a reason. Adding porque merely to make a simple sentence longer does not automatically make the message clearer or more appropriate.

Compare “Não vou à aula porque estou doente” with “Vou à aula porque quero praticar”. These reasons support different decisions. The exercise situations are invented; you do not need to disclose health or personal information in a real message. Choose a brief reason that makes sense and reread the initial decision. The reader should understand both what will happen and the explanation offered for it.

Mas: contrast without erasing the first idea

“Quero ir ao café, mas hoje não posso” expresses a wish and a limitation. The first part remains true; the contrast explains why the message does not end in an agreement. “O curso é interessante, mas o horário não me dá jeito” similarly distinguishes a positive opinion from a practical problem. It does not mean that the course is bad or that the person has registered.

In the first complete example, the writer likes the idea but cannot come on Saturday. Sunday’s alternative appears in its own sentence. Identify three elements: interest, obstacle and new proposal. Starting only with sim might be interpreted as a confirmation. Reviewing the whole meaning is more useful than counting how many connectors you managed to include in a short message to another person.

Original example for practice

Olá, Marta! Quero ir ao café, mas no sábado não posso. Podemos combinar no domingo? Vou estar livre depois das três.

Por isso: give the result of the previous situation

“O autocarro está atrasado, por isso vou chegar mais tarde” states a situation and a consequence. Arriving later follows from the delay in this example. Compare “Vou chegar mais tarde porque o autocarro está atrasado”: the basic relationship is retained, but the information order changes. Do not replace one expression with the other without reorganising the sentence and checking the resulting meaning carefully.

You can also separate them: “O autocarro está atrasado. Por isso, vou chegar mais tarde.” Punctuation supports reading; there is no need to join everything into one long sentence. Start with two clear ideas and avoid chaining several reasons without knowing which explains each decision. A practical message should make the relevant consequence clear and show whether the reader needs to respond or change an arrangement.

Worked exercises: choose and explain the connector

Complete “Fico em casa ___ estou cansado”. Porque is natural here: tiredness explains the decision. In “Estou cansado, ___ vou à aula”, mas contrasts tiredness with going to class. In “Estou cansado, ___ fico em casa”, por isso presents staying home as the consequence. These answers follow the intended relationship rather than a rule that one connector always accompanies a particular action or adjective.

Now rewrite “Não tenho tempo, por isso vou estudar amanhã” using porque: “Vou estudar amanhã porque não tenho tempo.” This retains the central meaning here. “Não tenho tempo porque vou estudar amanhã” changes the explanation and may not make sense. Compare who does what, when and why. Do not judge the answer solely by whether the required word appears somewhere in the rewritten sentence.

Write a message whose connections make sense

Write four sentences about an invented plan: what you want to do, a difficulty, a decision and a reason. Connect only what needs connecting. You do not have to include porque, mas and por isso in the same text. The second model links a scheduling problem to studying tomorrow. Ask a partner to explain the decision without pointing to connector words; the meaning should remain understandable.
