Everyday Portuguese A2
Há, desde and durante: Portuguese time expressions
“Cheguei há dois anos” places an arrival two years ago; “Moro aqui há dois anos” describes residence continuing for two years; “Moro aqui desde 2024” names the starting point. “Estudei durante duas horas” measures an activity. Choose by the question: when did it begin, how long has it continued, or how long did it last?

Short answer: identify the time question
Before choosing há, desde or durante, decide whether you mean a starting point, elapsed time or an activity’s duration. A date and a number of years do not work identically. “Desde 2024” gives a reference point; “há dois anos” gives a time distance in context. Do not exchange the expressions without checking the rest of the sentence and the kind of information the question actually requests.
All dates and quantities here are fictional. Do not use these examples to calculate legal residence, administrative deadlines or document validity: those require their own rules. This guide studies language relationships. Saying that someone lives somewhere does not establish their legal status or the date that would count for an official process, even when the grammar is clear.
| Portuguese | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Cheguei há dois anos. | I arrived two years ago. |
| Moro aqui há dois anos. | I have lived here for two years. |
| Estudo desde janeiro. | I have been studying since January. |
| Estudei durante duas horas. | I studied for two hours. |
| Vou começar daqui a duas semanas. | I will start in two weeks. |
| Durante a aula, li um texto. | During the lesson, I read a text. |
Há: past distance and duration up to now
In “Cheguei há dois anos”, há dois anos places an event before the speaking moment. In “Moro aqui há dois anos”, it measures a situation that continues. Verb and context distinguish these readings. Do not translate every há plus time as ago while ignoring whether the rest of the sentence establishes an ongoing situation. Read the entire statement before deciding which English construction expresses it accurately.
Há is a form of haver and takes h here. “Daqui a duas semanas” looks forward and uses a without h. Compare “Comecei há duas semanas” with “Vou começar daqui a duas semanas”. Similar pronunciation does not erase the difference between a past start and a future plan. The latter is an intention, not a guarantee that the activity will happen exactly as stated.
Original example for practice
PASSADO: acontecimento Cheguei há dois anos. Comecei o curso há duas semanas. SITUAÇÃO QUE CONTINUA Moro aqui há dois anos. Estudo português desde janeiro. DURAÇÃO DE UMA ATIVIDADE Ontem estudei durante duas horas. Durante a aula, li um texto e fiz perguntas. FUTURO Vou começar daqui a duas semanas. Vou ficar durante uma semana.
Desde: an identified starting point
“Estudo português desde janeiro” names the start. A date, part of a day or another contextually suitable point can follow. “Desde há dois anos” is possible, but initial practice uses clear contrasts: desde janeiro and há dois meses. Do not turn desde into a word that only accepts numbers or invariably means a finished duration; the example describes learning continuing from a named starting point.
“Desde quando?” asks for that start; “Há quanto tempo?” requests an interval. Both may describe one situation through different answers. Converting a date to an exact duration requires the speaking date and enough detail. Where an exercise supplies no calendar reference, retain what it gives rather than invent completed months or pretend you know the precise day an activity began.
Durante: duration without automatic continuity
“Estudei durante duas horas” measures a past activity without saying it continues now. “Vou ficar durante uma semana” measures a planned stay. Durante does not itself set the verb tense: past or future depends on the sentence. “Durante a reunião” can refer to an event’s period without stating how many minutes it lasted. Distinguish a named period from a numerical measure before trying to calculate anything.
Compare duration with start time: “Trabalhei durante três horas” does not tell you when work began. “Comecei às nove” does not tell you its length. Do not automatically manufacture one number from the other. Calculating a finish or duration requires extra information and an understanding of any breaks or limits relevant to the situation you have actually been given.
Worked exercises and limits of the information
The answers below are: 1 há; 2 desde; 3 durante; 4 a. Chegou places an event in the first sentence; janeiro marks the start in the second; duas horas measures an activity in the third; daqui a points forward in the fourth. The verbs and markers determine the answers rather than the mere presence of a number after the blank.
The message says someone started a course in January and still attends. You can identify the start, not an exact duration without the conversation date. They also studied for two hours yesterday; that does not tell us the course’s total length. Separate a daily session, the beginning of learning and the next planned activity rather than adding periods that describe different things.
Original example for practice
1. Cheguei ___ duas semanas. 2. Estudo português ___ janeiro. 3. Ontem estudei ___ duas horas. 4.
Production: three relationships in a short biography
Invent a biography with a past arrival, an ongoing activity and a completed session. Add a future plan using daqui a. A partner draws the timeline and identifies which statements remain true now. Change the speaking moment and discuss which relative expressions need updating while fixed dates remain unchanged. This tests whether the time relationships survive retelling rather than simply whether the expected words appear somewhere in the text.
Continue with yesterday’s narrative and future plans for context, and the A2 path for varied practice. CEFR and Camões provide the educational framework; timelines, biographies and answers are editorial materials. They are neither legal deadline calculations nor official CIPLE tasks. The exercise checks temporal clarity rather than anyone’s documentary status.
The CEFR describes A2 as simple, direct communication in routine tasks on familiar matters and simple descriptions of personal background and immediate needs.
