Short answer: introduce yourself and state the purpose

A useful opening combines a greeting, sufficient identification and a reason. “Bom dia, fala o Rui. Telefono por causa da reunião” supplies a starting point. Appropriate identification depends on context; this practice requires no sensitive details. All people and arrangements in the models are invented. Do not treat them as real contacts or instructions to call an organisation, or infer that every service requires the same identification.

Prepare three keywords: person sought, subject and main question. A full script can help initially but makes unexpected replies harder if you read without listening. Begin with a short call and leave room for clarification. Avoid memorising a long speech that works only if your partner gives one exact answer; real comprehension requires adapting to the response you receive.

Short answer: introduce yourself and state the purpose
PortugueseMeaning
Podia falar com a Ana, por favor?Could I speak to Ana, please?
Fala o Rui.This is Rui speaking.
Posso deixar um recado?May I leave a message?
Não estou a ouvir bem.I cannot hear well.
Pode soletrar o nome?Could you spell the name?
Então fica para quinta-feira às dez?So is it Thursday at ten?

Ask for someone and handle a message

“Podia falar com a Ana?” requests the person. If unavailable, “Posso deixar um recado?” starts a different task: passing on a message. Include who it is from, its subject and the expected action where relevant. “Diga que telefonei” may suffice in a known context; in a new exercise, give enough background for the recipient to understand why you called and whether something needs doing.

“Volto a telefonar” differs from “Pode pedir-lhe para me telefonar?” The former makes the caller responsible for another call; the latter requests contact from the other person. That changes the next step. The first dialogue confirms the message so neither participant finishes uncertain about who is supposed to contact whom after the exchange.

Original example for practice

Chamada 1 — recado fictício — Bom dia. Fala o Rui. Podia falar com a Ana, por favor? — A Ana não está disponível neste momento. Quer deixar recado? — Sim. Telefono por causa da reunião de leitura. Queria confirmar o local. — Pode dizer o seu nome outra vez? — Rui. — Rui, sobre o local da reunião. É isso? — Sim. Volto a telefonar amanhã de manhã. — Vou transmitir o recado. — Muito obrigado. Até amanhã.

When you cannot hear: sound or language?

“Não estou a ouvir bem” can describe poor sound; “Não percebi a última palavra” identifies a particular comprehension gap. Choose what matches the problem. If only the time was missed, ask “Pode repetir a hora?” You do not need to restart everything or pretend to understand simply to finish sooner. Specific requests let the other person provide the information you actually need to continue.

“Pode falar mais devagar?” adjusts speed. “Pode soletrar o nome?” asks for letters rather than louder pronunciation. Use invented names and references. A partner should respond to the difficulty stated: repeating a whole number will not necessarily fix an uncertain letter in a name. Confirm the precise element before recording it as final rather than writing a plausible guess and forgetting that it remains uncertain.

Confirm date, time and responsibility

If corrected to Thursday, retain the final version. Two dates in one call do not necessarily mean two meetings: one may be an abandoned proposal. The second dialogue combines day, time and a request for another response so the participant knows what has changed and what remains pending after the call ends.

A call about a service does not establish a universal service procedure. These examples set no rules for appointments, identity checks or cancellations. Follow the scene’s information and confirm the arrangement. In a real situation, the organisation’s instructions matter; the invented exchange cannot replace them or prove that a specific booking exists merely because the dialogue contains a confirmation phrase.

Original example for practice

Chamada 2 — alteração fictícia — Bom dia. Podemos conversar na terça-feira às dez? — Desculpe, não ouvi bem o dia. Pode repetir? — Terça-feira. — Na terça-feira não posso. Pode ser na quinta-feira, à mesma hora? — Quinta-feira às dez? — Sim. Pode confirmar depois por mensagem? — Posso. Vou enviar uma mensagem. — Obrigada. Fico a aguardar.

Worked exercises: interpret the next step

In the first dialogue, Ana is unavailable; Rui leaves a message and intends to call again. There is no confirmed promise that Ana will call him. In the second, Thursday at ten replaces Tuesday. The recipient still requests confirmation by message. Retaining Tuesday or saying the message has arrived adds incorrect information even if the exercise’s other details have been understood correctly.

Choose the appropriate phrase: you heard the time but missed the name—ask for spelling; you heard the name but missed the day—request the day again. Write a note with confirmed information and a separate pending item. The task checks what you can do after the call, not just whether you recognised one familiar word or copied the first number mentioned.

Original example for practice

A Ana atendeu? Quem pretende voltar a telefonar? Qual é o dia final e a hora?

Practise without a complete script, then use audio

Give partners different cards: the caller knows the subject, the colleague knows availability and the reply. Call without viewing each other’s card. Include a correction and repetition request, ending with confirmation. Compare notes. Where they differ, repeat only the necessary part and explain what changed rather than redo the entire conversation without addressing the original source of misunderstanding.

The appointment-change audio offers another listening exchange. Use clarification and numbers guides too. CEFR and Camões provide the framework; dialogues and solutions are editorial, not real calls, official service scripts or CIPLE tasks. Practise face to face without publishing contact details or recording another person without agreement.
