Everyday Portuguese A2
Por vs para in Portuguese: examples and exercises
“Para a professora” names a recipient; “para estudar” gives a purpose; “pelo jardim” gives a route; “obrigado pela ajuda” expresses thanks. Start with these relationships rather than a fixed translation. The table and exercises explain a selected set of contexts, not every use.

Short answer: choose the relationship, not a translation
“Este caderno é para a professora” identifies a recipient. “Passei pelo jardim” gives a route. “Obrigado pela ajuda” uses an expression of gratitude. These starting points distinguish functions that can look alike in translation. Read the complete sentence before deciding whether one preposition can replace the other without changing its message.
The CEFR describes general communication skills; Referencial Camões PLE provides language functions and content. The examples here are original and deliberately selective. There is no formula covering every use of por and para, and no claim that this is a closed list of content officially required in a language examination.
| Portuguese | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Este caderno é para a professora. | This notebook is for the teacher. |
| Vou telefonar para confirmar a hora. | I am going to call to confirm the time. |
| Vou para casa. | I am going home. |
| Passei pelo jardim. | I went through the garden. |
| Obrigado pela ajuda. | Thank you for the help. |
Para: recipient and purpose
Para introduces a recipient in “Esta mensagem é para o João”. With an infinitive, it can express purpose: “Vou telefonar para confirmar a hora.” Ask “for whom?” in the first case and “with what aim?” in the second. Explaining the relationship is more useful than translating each word separately before making a choice.
Compare “comprei um livro para a minha irmã” with “comprei um livro para estudar”. One names the intended recipient, the other an intended activity. The word after para offers a clue, but the whole sentence still matters. Invent different examples and state which of these two functions you are practising each time.
Original example for practice
Este bilhete é para a Marta. Vou ligar para confirmar o encontro. Comprei um caderno para escrever as palavras novas.
Destination and route: para onde or por onde?
“Vou para casa” gives a destination. “Vou pelo jardim” gives a route. Both can appear together: “Vou para casa pelo jardim.” These are not interchangeable translations; they answer different questions. Draw a destination and two possible routes to make the distinction visible before trying a new sentence about the same journey.
“Pelo” combines por with o; “pela” combines por with a; the plurals are pelos and pelas. A contraction is not a new unrelated word. We retain para o and para a in the written examples. Other uses and register variants exist but are unnecessary for this initial contrast between route and destination.
Learn complete expressions: obrigado por
“Obrigado pela mensagem” and “obrigada por responder” link gratitude to its reason. Por plus a gives pela in the first; an infinitive follows por in the second. Learning whole expressions avoids choosing a preposition merely because a person or action is nearby. Obrigado or obrigada agrees with the person expressing thanks.
For a cause, you may encounter “por causa de”: “Cheguei tarde por causa do trânsito.” Do not infer that every cause must always use por. Other constructions exist. Initially keep this block within a context and build a coherent sentence instead of swapping words inside a rule that is too broad.
Original example for practice
Obrigado pela explicação. Obrigada por esperar. Passei pelo jardim antes de chegar a casa. Cheguei tarde por causa do trânsito.
Exercises with answers: explain the function
Complete “Este email é ___ a professora”; “Vou ligar ___ confirmar a hora”; “Obrigado ___ ajuda”; “Passámos ___ jardim”. For the intended contexts: para, para, pela and pelo. These express recipient, purpose, gratitude and route. In the last two, an article requires the appropriate contraction: por with a or with o.
Next compare “Vou para a escola” and “Vou pela escola”. The first indicates a destination; the second can indicate passing that place along a route. They cannot be exchanged without changing meaning. Add a destination to the second sentence to clarify the intention, then ask a partner to describe the route they understood.
From choosing a blank to writing a message
Write three sentences: a message for someone, an action with a purpose and a route to a destination. Underline por or para and explain its function. Remove the prepositions for a partner to complete. If two versions work, compare meanings rather than rejecting an answer when the surrounding context is insufficient.
Return to restaurant language for “para levar” and work messages for confirmation requests. General A2 practice provides comprehension tasks and explanations, without certifying mastery of every preposition. Keep context-dependent questions for review with someone who can explain the difference between the messages your alternative sentences would convey.
The CEFR describes A2 as simple, direct communication in routine tasks on familiar matters and simple descriptions of personal background and immediate needs.
