Short answer: make one request at a time

Start with “Boa tarde. Têm uma mesa para duas pessoas?” When choosing, ask for the menu and one specific detail. You do not need to announce everything in one sentence. A short request leaves room to listen and adjust your choice, especially when a reply contains a word you have not met before.

The CEFR links A2 to simple exchanges about familiar needs. That broad framework supports this activity; our dialogues do not reproduce an examination. Before memorising new vocabulary, choose one task: finding a table, clarifying a dish or requesting the bill. Practising one function at a time makes it easier to identify what needs reviewing.

Short answer: make one request at a time
PortugueseMeaning
Têm uma mesa para duas pessoas?Do you have a table for two?
Pode trazer a ementa, por favor?Could you bring the menu, please?
O que leva este prato? What is in this dish?
Queria uma sopa e uma água.I would like a soup and a water.
Para levar, por favor. To take away, please.
A conta, por favor. The bill, please.

Menu, dish and side: ask what is included

“Pode trazer a ementa, por favor?” begins the selection. If a dish is unclear, ask “O que leva este prato?” or “Qual é o acompanhamento?” Saying which word you do not understand is more useful than choosing a familiar-sounding name. The other person can explain differently or point to an option.

For a preference, practise “Não como carne” and “Tem alguma opção sem carne?” These express a food choice; the example verifies no ingredients and provides no allergy guidance. Relevant real-life details need direct clarification. In practice, use fictional preferences and focus on understanding the explanation instead of guessing what a dish contains.

Order and confirm quantities

“Queria uma sopa e uma água, por favor” politely places an order. For two people, distinguish one drink from two and check whether each request is clear. The dialogue contains a follow-up: an initial order may not finish the conversation because an option or quantity can still be missing.

Read the example and change just one element: the drink, number of soups or side dish. Cover the text and recreate the exchange with a partner. Changing five words at once can obscure the purpose of the exercise. First aim for a comprehensible exchange, then add variety to the vocabulary you use.

Original example for practice

— Boa tarde. Queria uma sopa e uma água, por favor. — É para comer aqui ou para levar? — Para comer aqui. Queria também um prato de legumes com arroz. — Mais alguma coisa? — A sopa vem com pão? — Sim, vem com pão. — Está bem. É tudo, obrigada.

Eat here or take away?

“É para comer aqui ou para levar?” asks where the order is intended to be eaten. Reply “Para comer aqui” or “Para levar, por favor” according to the fictional situation. The question is not asking which dish you want. If the expression is unfamiliar, request another explanation before answering it.

Another possible question is “Mais alguma coisa?” You can reply “É tudo, obrigado” or add something. Useful practice involves recognising the purpose of the question rather than always giving the same reply. Write two versions: finish the order in one, add water in the other. Check whether a partner can distinguish them by listening alone.

Exercise with answers: identify the missing detail

Read: “Queria duas sopas.” — “E para beber?” What is missing? The drink choice, not the number of soups. One possible answer is “Uma água para cada pessoa, por favor.” Now imagine hearing “É para levar?” and produce a complete response explaining that you will eat at the restaurant instead.

In a second fictional task, the bill lists two waters but you ordered one. Try “Desculpe, pode confirmar a conta? Pedi só uma água.” This requests a check without turning uncertainty into a confrontation. We establish no charging rules or consumer rights here: the task practises asking a clear question about an apparent difference.

Finish with the bill and review the exchange

Ask “A conta, por favor” and “Posso pagar com cartão?” Asking does not guarantee that the payment method is available. In practice, a partner can answer yes or no and suggest another fictional option. Your task is to listen before acting and confirm your understanding in a short sentence.

Rehearse a complete table-order-bill sequence. Note where help was needed: vocabulary, quantities or the purpose of a question. Use the general A2 exercises and learning path to alternate comprehension and production. Let an error explanation guide the next task rather than repeating the same dialogue until every reply has been memorised.
