Lost residence card in Portugal: replacement and next steps
Losing a residence title differs from letting it expire. Organise the incident, identify your document category and separate a duplicate request from renewal before submitting records.

Short answer
Article 73 permits a duplicate for damage, loss, misplacement, destruction or theft, except where renewal is required.
This guide concerns the general residence-title regime. The current operational channel needs confirmation; no issue date, travel permission or automatic replacement is promised.
Replacement or renewal: what should you check first?
Start with the actual document: category, validity and why you no longer have it in usable condition. Keep an earlier copy if available and identify the competent service. Similar everyday names can refer to documents governed by different regimes. An EU citizen’s certificate should not automatically follow a general residence-permit procedure. Personal urgency does not turn a duplicate request into renewal or establish which application should take priority.

Article 73 permits a duplicate for damage, loss, misplacement, destruction or theft, except where renewal is required.
Organise identification, a copy of the title if available, an account of events and evidence of reporting where required. Describe what actually happened instead of selecting a different incident because it seems easier. Retain documents and reference numbers received. Avoid posting your passport and card in public groups to ask which form applies. Confirm the final list for the particular document and request; a prepared folder is not an administrative decision.
Confirmed by official source
A duplicate request requires reasons and, for loss, misplacement, destruction or theft, evidence of reporting to the police authority.
The original turned up after the request: can you use it?
Do not treat finding the plastic as automatically restoring its usability. Record when the request was made and when you recovered the document. Follow the applicable handover rule and retain evidence. Do not abandon the issue because the card looks intact or still displays a future date. Physical appearance and administrative document status are different matters, especially after a disappearance has already been reported and a duplicate requested.
Confirmed by official source
A duplicate request after loss or theft triggers the alerts in Article 73(5); a recovered original cannot be used and must be handed to AIMA.
The legal basis explains duplicates but does not itself establish one universal option in a current portal. This review did not confirm a single operational route for every category. Consult current AIMA guidance and describe the document, incident and validity when seeking clarification. Instructions for another category or from an old notice are not a guarantee. We do not publish invented buttons, an unverified contact or an unsupported issue deadline.
Needs review
This review did not verify one current operational channel covering every duplicate request. Confirm your document category’s procedure with AIMA before sending records.
A resident loses a title shortly before leaving Portugal. They organise the incident and seek replacement guidance while separately checking the planned journey. This editorial example predicts no admission or return permission. A police report should not be treated as a universal substitute residence title. Check with the relevant authorities and carrier before assuming that evidence of an incident resolves every stage of an international route or boarding decision.
Record category, validity, reason, incident date and contact references. If renewal is already pending, explain that history to the service. A change of address also needs to be identified through the appropriate procedure; do not assume reprinting automatically corrects every record. Retain readable copies and official replies in a private folder. Do not open incompatible requests simply because several channels appear available or somebody else received a different instruction.
Read the replacement provision and seek the operational instruction matching your title. Ask which channel currently applies, what evidence is missing and how to proceed with a pending renewal or recovered original. Keep those questions distinct in a clear enquiry. Another person’s reply may help formulate a question, but does not replace guidance for your document, establish appointment availability or guarantee a particular administrative outcome in your circumstances.
Read Article 73 and distinguish a duplicate from renewal.
