Expired Portuguese residence card in 2026: renewal and proof
An expired Portuguese residence card requires checking your renewal and supporting evidence. Residence rights, card validity and permission to travel are separate questions.

Short answer
Regulation Article 63(14), subject to its statutory caveats, states residence rights do not lapse before six months after the expiring card. This does not automatically update the card’s printed expiry date.
Sources: Diário da República; AIMA ·AIMA identified 15 April 2026 as the end of the six-month period for cards expired by 30 June 2025, counting from 15 October 2025. That date is past in October 2026.

Does an expired card mean losing residence rights?
Check continuing residence rights, document validity and a provable renewal application separately. These questions need not have the same answer. The rule below does not change the date printed on the card or resolve every requirement of another service. Also establish whether your document falls under the general regime, the European regime or a category governed by special provisions before applying general guidance to it.
| Check | How to use this guide |
|---|---|
| Right | Check continuity under the applicable regime separately from document validity. |
| Card | A residence rule does not by itself change the card’s printed expiry. |
| Application | Keep submission evidence, distinguishing it from preparation and an isolated payment reference. |
| Journey | Check borders, transit and the carrier; domestic evidence is not a universal travel guarantee. |

Last checked:Why an old extension announcement can mislead
Search results still surface instructions covering documents that expired during an earlier period. Read the announcement’s date, covered categories and end point. The historical measure below should not be used as an unlimited extension in October 2026. Retain old announcements to explain the history of your case where relevant, while checking current instructions before presenting them as authority for your position today.

Last checked:What evidence to keep after submitting renewal
Organise the expired card and the document that actually proves submission of the renewal application. A statement of intention, an unfinished form or a payment reference alone should not automatically be described as a submitted application. Check the name, case reference and document type. Keep the original digital file and a readable copy without editing the content of the evidence supplied by the authority.
AIMA tells people who have started renewal to carry the expired card together with the receipt proving the application.
Last checked:A delay does not automatically mean approval
The September amendment requires care with claims about approval through silence. The repealed provision is identified below; delay should not be turned into a promise of a grant. To clarify your application’s position, prepare its timeline and received communications. A receipt may demonstrate that something was delivered without being a favourable decision or evidence that a new residence card has already been issued.
Law 62/2026 repealed Article 82(7), the renewal provision on approval in the absence of a decision. This does not mean every special tacit-approval regime was repealed.
Last checked:Can you travel with an expired card or renewal receipt?
Before departure, check travel documents, transit, admission at the destination and return to Portugal separately. Guidance about residence within Portugal does not guarantee acceptance by an airline or foreign authority. This guide does not confirm permission to travel using any particular receipt. For an essential journey, obtain information specific to your documents and itinerary rather than relying solely on another traveller’s experience or a general social-media claim.
A practical plan while the application is pending
Record the card’s expiry, application date and steps completed. Identify messages requiring a response and documents AIMA requested. If you moved, address the update using the corresponding channel rather than assuming it will appear automatically in the case. When explaining the position to another service, present the facts and evidence without promising a decision date the authority has not provided. Keep proof of subsequent submissions together with the original file.
When a new document arrives, check its personal details before archiving the case. For an error, retain the document received and find the official correction instruction. Do not edit a card or receipt to show another organisation; explain the discrepancy and preserve the original evidence.
