Portuguese criminal record: when to request it for AIMA or citizenship
Before paying for a certificate, establish whether you need a Portuguese record, a foreign certificate or authorisation for direct consultation. The procedure and issuing country make a difference.

Short answer
For residence, AIMA can be authorised to consult the Portuguese record; for nationality, the registry accesses it directly. Required foreign records are separate.
First identify the requesting service and issuing country
Write down the procedure and receiving authority before selecting a service. An instruction referring to criminal records may concern different countries and documents. Separate the Portuguese record from other states’ certificates and note what each item is intended to demonstrate. Read DGAJ’s direct-access guidance within that scope. This initial distinction can avoid travel and payment for a document that does not answer the request, without turning administrative guidance into permission to omit other attachments or assume the whole application is complete.

For residence, AIMA can be authorised to consult the Portuguese record; for nationality, the registry accesses it directly. Required foreign records are separate.
If the application requires a document from another country, identify its competent issuer, purpose and the formalities specified by the recipient. Do not automatically apply the Portuguese access-code rule to a foreign certificate. Organise the original, any authentication and translation as connected items, retaining the reference explaining the document. The apostille and translation guide can help frame questions, but exemptions for a registry procedure should not be transferred to every consulate or AIMA route. Establish the requirements of the actual application before commissioning additional work.
Access codes: validity does not answer every requirement
Treat the code as sensitive information and share it only with a recipient who needs to consult the certificate. When preparing delivery, record the issue date and intended use date. An old printout and a current consultation are not necessarily the same documentary snapshot. The code-validity rule below does not determine every receiving procedure’s acceptance period for a certificate issued abroad. If a recipient requests a particular purpose or format, clarify that requirement before repeatedly forwarding the same file or assuming an earlier copy will be sufficient.
Confirmed by official source
The access code lasts 90 days from issue; consultation shows the certificate updated at that time.
Online access for foreign nationals: a discrepancy to clarify
The general DGAJ summary differs from the portal FAQ’s description of authentication profiles. This point is therefore marked for review. We conclude neither that all foreign nationals are excluded nor that every CMD will work. Open the official portal and check the options for the document linked to your identity. If authentication fails, describe the document and error to support without disclosing private codes. This article has not completed an authenticated login or submitted a certificate request on a user’s behalf.
Needs review
Official pages describe CMD profiles differently; confirm the access available for the applicant’s document in the portal.
Living in Portugal or abroad: select the appropriate channel
Do not choose a form solely by nationality. Compare your actual residence with the scope stated by the official channel and read its warning before starting. A temporary trip should not be assumed to change your residence position for the form. Prepare identification and check published alternatives if a digital channel is unsuitable. Recording an uncertainty and requesting clarification is preferable to supplying inaccurate information simply to get past a screen that does not appear to fit your profile or present circumstances.
Confirmed by official source
The form for residents abroad is not for Portugal residents; DGAJ warns of refusal without refund if misused.
Illustrative example: organise a dossier without duplicate requests
Imagine someone preparing a Portuguese residence application alongside documents from the country where they previously lived. This is an editorial example. First, the person separates Portuguese-record consultation from foreign certificates mentioned in the procedure. Next they establish whether to authorise access, obtain a document or clarify a formality. Each task is marked with its source and date, without labelling the entire folder exempt. The benefit is knowing exactly which item remains outstanding; it is not a guarantee of approval or faster processing.
Final checklist and official resources
Before closing the folder, check issuing country, recipient, purpose, channel and dates for each document. Ensure a translation corresponds to the correct certificate and that files belonging to different family members have not been mixed. Use the official pages below to revisit the guidance and confirm the digital-access point still marked for review. Do not post full certificates or access codes in public comments. Use the moving checklist for overall organisation and keep nationality-specific questions within the relevant document checklist and official procedure.
