EU long-term resident status in Portugal: requirements and mobility limits
EU long-term resident status in Portugal, or ERLD, has specific eligibility and continuity rules. Check study periods and what the status means for a planned move to another country.

Short answer
Article 126 generally requires five years of legal continuous residence immediately before applying, stable regular resources, health insurance, accommodation and basic Portuguese. Article 125 scope and exclusions also matter.
Sources: Diário da República; AIMA ·
The status grants neither EU citizenship nor automatic settlement in another country.

Who can apply for EU long-term resident status?
Before collecting documents, write down the exact outcome: national permanent residence or EU long-term resident status. Both may be relevant after several years in Portugal, but they do not share one interchangeable eligibility list. Establish whether your current category falls within ERLD’s scope. A comparison based only on the word permanent overlooks exclusions and counting rules that can materially change the assessment.

Last checked:Study periods: do not export this rule to other applications
A history involving study needs more than counting the years between arrival and today. Distinguish previous study periods from the permit held when you seek the status. The confirmed counting rule below has specific conditions. Do not transfer it to nationality or another residence regime. Prepare a sequence of authorisations, identifying the legal basis of each, so that the actual history can be considered.
Under Article 126(3), after obtaining an authorisation eligible for ERLD, prior study, unpaid-training or volunteering residence periods count at half their duration.
Last checked:Absences: establish a timeline before adding days
Use your passport and other reliable evidence to reconstruct entries and departures. Mark missing journeys and reasons for relevant work-related absences. The objective is to enable a continuity assessment, not to produce an approximate total and declare yourself eligible. ERLD’s qualifying continuity rule is different from the general cancellation rule for temporary residence. Applying one limit to both procedures can lead to a mistaken conclusion.
For Article 126(4) qualification, absences shorter than 6 consecutive months and no more than 10 months in total over the relevant period do not interrupt residence; work posting has a specific rule.
Last checked:Booking: screening evidence is not the entire legal test
AIMA’s booking guidance identifies documents used to assess the request’s routing. Prepare readable, complete files and check the current official instruction. A list used to request an appointment does not replace every legal condition of the status. If your history involves study, international protection or another special situation, describe it accurately rather than simplifying the record to make the documents look more straightforward than they are.
AIMA’s 19 December 2025 notice provides ERLD booking through its contact form and asks for scans of the card, full passport, last five years’ IRS returns and social-contribution record.
Last checked:Status and document: keep track of both
After a favourable decision, retain it and check the document issued. A permanent status does not eliminate renewal of its documentary evidence. Where another service needs current proof, supply the appropriate evidence rather than assuming an old decision resolves every request. Identification changes, loss conditions and absence rules need checking within this particular regime; they cannot be inferred solely from a date printed on a card.
ERLD status is permanent; the EU long-term residence card has a minimum five-year validity and is renewable under Articles 129 and 130.
Last checked:Does ERLD allow a move to another EU country?
Do not treat the European dimension of ERLD as settlement freedom identical to EU citizenship. Before accepting a job or moving your family, consult the destination authority and its conditions. Prepare questions about the category, resources, insurance, family and application procedure. The European source below explains the principle; your admission and residence in the destination country depend on the rules applicable there, rather than on the Portuguese card alone.
ERLD mobility to reside in a second participating state is not automatic: the Commission portal describes applying for and obtaining that state’s permit and meeting its conditions.
