What are the Article 80 permanent residence requirements?
Start by identifying the article governing your current permit and the history of your authorisations. Having lived in Portugal for a long time does not by itself establish every condition. The relevant period and additional requirements appear in the fact cards below. If you hold documentation as an EU citizen’s family member, examine the European regime first rather than automatically applying this general-regime checklist.

|---|---|
| Regime | Establish whether you need Article 80, ERLD or a European-regime document. |
| Conditions | Organise history and evidence; elapsed time alone does not establish eligibility. |
| Document | Separate the duration of status from the validity of its documentary evidence. |
| Booking | Use the guidance for the general regime and check it before sending personal information. |

Separate the status recognised in your favour from the document proving it. Permanent does not mean you will never need to update or renew the card. Retain the grant decision and track changes to your identification details. A printed expiry date should neither be treated in isolation as automatic loss of status nor ignored simply because the underlying status has unlimited duration.
Permanent authorisation has no fixed validity limit; its card must be renewed every five years or when recorded identification particulars change under Article 76.

The verified guidance for the general regime is recorded below. Before writing, check that it remains current and that your situation matches the stated subject. Provide a concise description, permit reference and correct contact details. Avoid sending unnecessary sensitive documents or using addresses found in comment sections. Keep the message and reply; asking for an appointment is not a decision granting permanent residence.
AIMA’s March 2026 FAQ directs national permanent-permit grant/renewal booking requests to geral@aima.gov.pt with subject “Agendamento de Concessão/Renovação de AR permanente”.
Last checked:Documents: build a coherent file
Group identification and previous permits, evidence of accommodation and means, Portuguese proof and additional documents requested by the applicable instructions. Check the official list before submission; this suggested organisation does not replace it. Prepare a documented explanation for gaps, name changes or a complex criminal record. A specific statutory criminal condition should not be simplified into a blanket claim that any conviction always prevents an application.
Portuguese proof: identify an accepted document
The administrative objective is to demonstrate the required knowledge through an accepted route, rather than necessarily buy preparation or take one particular examination. Check the certificate’s content, issuer and match with the document described by AIMA. Registration or attendance evidence should not be mistaken for a completion certificate. The linked language-proof guide develops this part of the file separately so it does not overwhelm the other eligibility requirements.
Article 80 permanent residence requires proof of basic Portuguese through one of the forms accepted by AIMA.
Last checked:AIMA accepts a basic-Portuguese certificate obtained through a test at a recognised CAPLE centre.
Last checked:Portuguese as a Host Language certification at A2 or above is accepted as language evidence for permanent residence.
Last checked:After the grant: keep the file usable
Retain the decision and permit copies and track document renewals and changes of details. Before an extended absence, consult the applicable rules and gather evidence of the reason where relevant. Permanent residence is not Portuguese citizenship and does not itself guarantee permission to settle in another country. Compare regimes separately, especially if your next objective is to work or live outside Portugal rather than simply remain here.
Under the general regime, permanent authorisation may be cancelled for absence without acceptable reasons of 24 consecutive or 30 non-consecutive months within three years.
