Everyday Portuguese A2
Gostar de and preferir: express likes in Portuguese
“Gosto de café” means “I like coffee”, while “Prefiro chá” means “I prefer tea”. Keep de before an activity with gostar: “Gosto de ler”. Preferir directly takes a noun or infinitive in this use: “Prefiro ler”. Learn to separate a general liking, a current choice and an invitation response.

Short answer: liking something and choosing an option
Gostar and preferir do not communicate identical information. You can like coffee yet prefer tea at that moment. “Não gosto de café” denies a liking; “Prefiro chá” chooses an alternative without saying you dislike coffee. Read the entire reply before inferring a permanent refusal from a choice made in one particular situation or at one particular time.
The table shows common patterns with nouns and activities. This guide covers the present tense and simple conversations rather than every tense or use of these verbs. Start with a real or invented preference and add context. You do not have to turn every reply into a full comparison when one short sentence already answers the question clearly.
| Portuguese | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Gosto de café. | I like coffee. |
| Gosto de ler. | I like reading. |
| Gosto do curso. | I like the course. |
| Prefiro chá. | I prefer tea. |
| Preferes estudar em casa? | Do you prefer studying at home? |
| Hoje prefiro ficar em casa. | Today I prefer to stay home. |
Gostar de: nouns, activities and contractions
In “Gosto de música”, de connects the verb to a noun. In “Gosto de cozinhar”, it introduces an infinitive activity. With an article, a contraction may occur: de plus o becomes do in “Gosto do curso”; de plus a becomes da in “Gosto da professora”. An article is not automatically required in every context, so avoid treating these contractions as compulsory replacements for every de.
Compare “Gosto de café” with “Gosto do café desta pastelaria”. The second identifies a more specific coffee. Do not mechanically insert or remove an article with any word you encounter. Practise the pairs given and explain the difference in reference. Then change only the activity to reading, walking or cooking while keeping the gostar de structure intact.
Preferir: choose without copying the gostar pattern
“Prefiro chá” and “Prefiro estudar de manhã” do not take de after the verb in this sense. To state both alternatives, try “Prefiro chá a café” or “Prefiro estudar de manhã a estudar à noite”. The second option need not be unpleasant: this expresses preference rather than prohibition. Avoid copying de automatically from the gostar construction into a sentence with preferir.
An ou question offers alternatives: “Preferes estudar em casa ou na biblioteca?” Reply with the option and, if useful, a reason. “Prefiro a biblioteca porque é mais calma” makes the choice clear. That is the character’s assessment in the example, not a claim that all libraries have identical conditions or that everyone should choose the same study setting.
Ask about preferences and respond
“Gostas de cozinhar?” addresses tu; “Gosta de cozinhar?” uses a third-person form and needs context to identify the addressee. The forms include gosto, gostas, gosta, gostamos and gostam. Preferir gives prefiro, preferes, prefere, preferimos and preferem. Changing only the pronoun while always keeping gosto or prefiro will not produce the intended agreement in these examples.
Use “Eu também” to share a positive liking and “Eu também não” to agree with a negative one. Read the first dialogue and identify which activity is enjoyed. If the person prefers a different option, ask about that choice rather than insist that they accept your own preference. The conversation should allow different answers instead of requiring both partners to like everything alike.
Original example for practice
— Gostas de cozinhar? — Sim, gosto muito. E tu? — Eu também. Preferes cozinhar em casa ou ir ao restaurante? — Hoje prefiro cozinhar em casa.
Exercises with answers and reasons
Complete “Gosto ___ ler”, “Prefiro ___ chá” and “Gostamos ___ curso da Ana”. The answers are de, no preposition in that space, and do. In the last example, the article refers to an identified course. Now change “Eu gosto de cozinhar” to nós: “Nós gostamos de cozinhar”. The preposition remains; it is the verb form that changes to match the subject.
Someone says “Gosto de caminhar, mas hoje prefiro ficar em casa”. Does that mean they hate walking? No: the general liking and today’s choice are different facts. Write a follow-up such as “Está a chover?” to ask for an explanation. Do not invent the reason and present it as though the original sentence had already confirmed it.
Original example for practice
1. Gosto ___ ler. 2. Prefiro ___ chá. 3. Gostamos ___ curso da Ana. 4. Eu gosto de cozinhar. → Nós ___ de cozinhar.
Speaking task: liking, choosing and explaining
Write three activities your character likes and two options for this afternoon. A partner asks about general likes and then the current choice. Answer consistently with the card and add an invented reason only when the task requests one. Swap roles. The aim is to separate habitual information from a decision in a particular context, not to produce the longest possible reply.
Continue with invitations to propose an activity and porque and mas to explain your answer. The A2 learning path covers skills beyond gap filling.
