Short answer: role, experience and purpose

Choose three details relevant to the conversation: your work or field, a concrete experience and the kind of opportunity you want. Use short sentences and leave room for a follow-up question. An initial introduction does not require your childhood history or a complete spoken version of everything on your CV.

The CEFR includes familiar matters, personal background and employment within its general A2 description. This reference helps us choose learning situations but does not determine an employer’s required level. The examples here are fictional editorial materials. They are not compulsory answers, hiring advice or a guarantee of success at an interview.

Short answer: role, experience and purpose
PortugueseMeaning
Fale um pouco sobre si.Tell me a little about yourself.
Trabalhei durante dois anos num armazém.I worked in a warehouse for two years.
Tenho disponibilidade de manhã.I am available in the mornings.
Quais são as principais tarefas? What are the main tasks?
Quais são os horários dos turnos? What are the shift times?
Qual é a próxima etapa do processo? What is the next stage of the process?

Introduction example: adapt the facts, not just the name

The fictional speaker names a field, two tasks and the kind of role they seek. “Trabalhei durante dois anos…” introduces completed experience; “procuro trabalho…” expresses a current aim. The connection between the sentences lets the interviewer choose a follow-up without guessing which information is relevant to the opportunity.

Use only truthful experience in a real conversation. If starting out, say “Ainda não trabalhei nesta área, mas…” and add an activity or learning experience you actually completed. Do not turn the example into invented personal qualities. When rehearsing with colleagues, keep the fictional character and make clear that you are acting out a learning situation.

Original example for practice

Bom dia. Chamo-me Rui. Trabalhei durante dois anos num armazém. Preparava encomendas e ajudava a organizar o espaço. Agora procuro trabalho numa função semelhante. Tenho disponibilidade de manhã. Gostaria de saber mais sobre as tarefas desta função.

Describe concrete tasks rather than adjectives

“Sou responsável” says little about an activity. “Preparava encomendas” or “Atendia clientes” provides a more concrete starting point when it reflects your experience. For this initial practice, use a simple sentence about a familiar task. If the verb form is unfamiliar, prepare it with help instead of improvising an unnecessarily complicated story.

The example also uses “Ajudava a organizar o espaço”. This is an imperfect form describing a habitual past activity; every verb need not be converted to one tense. The yesterday guide focuses on completed actions. The two materials serve different purposes and do not make up a complete grammar syllabus for employment interviews.

Availability: check what a timetable means

Questions such as “Tem disponibilidade ao sábado?” or “Pode trabalhar por turnos?” request concrete information. Give your real availability and clarify anything unclear. “Quais são os horários dos turnos?” is more useful than agreeing without knowing when you would have to be present. The actual reply may differ between offers.

If there is a limitation, say “Tenho disponibilidade de segunda a sexta, depois das nove”. Avoid promising a schedule you cannot keep. For practice, change the days and times and ask a partner to record exactly what they heard. Compare their notes with the character’s intended meaning rather than an imagined ideal interview answer.

Questions that help you understand the role

After introducing yourself, ask “Quais são as principais tarefas?” or “Como é um dia normal nesta função?” These questions help you obtain vocabulary and understand the work description. “Pode dar um exemplo?” provides a simple follow-up when the answer contains unfamiliar words or remains too general to understand.

You can also ask about the next step: “Qual é a próxima etapa do processo?” Do not mistake a friendly response for a job offer. This dialogue establishes no salary, employment conditions or documentation requirements. Those belong to the real opportunity and require separate understanding beyond the ability to repeat phrases from a fictional interview.

Worked exercise: improve a vague answer

Read this fictional reply: “Sou muito bom, faço tudo e posso sempre.” What is missing? An identifiable task, concrete experience and precise availability. Rewrite it with three verifiable details about the character: worked in a café, served customers and can work mornings. One possible answer appears below; other coherent versions can work.

Now ask an unexpected question: “Que tarefas fazia no café?” The character can explain two activities instead of repeating the whole introduction. During review, look for clarity, consistency and a reply to the actual question. We do not automatically grade interview quality or use the task to predict employability or a language assessment result.

Original example for practice

Trabalhei num café. Atendia clientes e ajudava a preparar os pedidos. Tenho disponibilidade para trabalhar de manhã. Gostaria de saber qual é o horário desta função.

Practise an exchange, not only a monologue

Write your introduction, reduce it to three keywords and try speaking without reading. Ask a partner for one question about experience and another about availability. Then swap roles. If you need to clarify a word, use the clarification guide. Requesting an explanation is also part of meaningful communication practice.

In the general A2 exercises, practise comprehension and read explanations. For speaking, seek feedback from someone able to assess your message. Multiple-choice answers alone do not measure interaction. Our learning sequence organises complementary tasks while keeping independent practice, the requirements of a job and official language certification separate.

The CEFR describes A2 as simple, direct communication in routine tasks on familiar matters and simple descriptions of personal background and immediate needs.
