Short answer: observation, context and request

“Há um problema em casa” can open a conversation but does not identify the object. “A janela do quarto não fecha” is more concrete. Add when it began and a request: inspection, an explanation of the next step or availability. A message need not be long to include these elements. Detail should help the recipient understand and reply rather than merely make the text sound more serious or formal.

This guide covers writing to someone responsible for a space or service, such as a landlord in a fictional situation. It decides neither payment, legal deadlines, contractual responsibility nor emergency procedures. The phrases describe communication and do not replace technical instructions. A vocabulary exercise is not a basis for attempting to repair equipment or concluding what a real contract obliges another person to do.

Short answer: observation, context and request
PortugueseMeaning
A janela do quarto não fecha. The bedroom window does not close.
O problema começou ontem. The problem started yesterday.
Não sei qual é a causa.I do not know the cause.
Pode indicar quando é possível verificar?Could you say when it can be checked?
Estou disponível de manhã.I am available in the morning.
Confirmo quinta-feira às onze.I confirm Thursday at eleven.

Describe observations without diagnosing

“A máquina não liga” reports an observation; “O motor está avariado” diagnoses something the message may not establish. Use the former if that is all you know. “Às vezes para a meio do programa” preserves intermittent frequency rather than saying it never works. Precision begins by limiting the statement to what was observed instead of selecting a technically impressive explanation unsupported by the scene.

The first model says a window has not closed since the previous day. No technical cause is identified. Adding broken hinges is not a summary: it introduces a hypothesis. You may ask a question about a possibility but should not turn it into a fact. The same habit supports messages about delays, incomplete requests and objects that differ from what a character expected.

Original example for practice

Modelo 1 — mensagem inicial fictícia Bom dia, Ana.

Time and location: details that change the meaning

“Desde ontem” identifies the observed start; “Ontem aconteceu duas vezes” gives frequency within a day. Neither automatically describes continuous failure. Identify the room with ordinary vocabulary: quarto, cozinha, casa de banho. For two similar objects, add enough detail to distinguish them without disclosing a real address in the exercise or filling in information that the fictional situation has never supplied.

The object type is the same; location changes what the recipient needs to identify. Hoje and amanhã depend on the message date. An explicit date can help in a longer exchange, but it must actually be supplied or agreed rather than guessed from when the learner happens to read the article.

Request a next step without inventing agreement

“Pode indicar quando é possível verificar?” requests availability; “Confirmo a visita amanhã às dez” states an agreement. Do not use the latter merely to propose. “Amanhã estou disponível entre as dez e as doze” gives an availability window, not proof someone will attend. The recipient still needs to accept or suggest another time before you treat that proposed visit as confirmed.

The second model proposes Thursday. The third confirms only after that proposal arrives. Read the full sequence before deciding whether a visit is arranged. If the time does not work, continue “Nesse horário não posso. Há outra possibilidade?” The goal is a clear exchange rather than simulating a service that guarantees immediate availability or establishing actual entitlement to a particular appointment.

Original example for practice

Worked exercises: edit a vague message

“Está tudo avariado. Venha amanhã” exaggerates and gives an order without context. The exercise card says only that the bedroom window has not closed since yesterday. Model one is a possible revision: it names object and place, preserves the start and requests inspection. Do not say every appliance failed or a visit has been accepted when neither fact appears in the fictional information provided.

The initial availability is Wednesday morning; the reply proposes Thursday at eleven; the final message accepts Thursday. The agreed time is Thursday at eleven, not two visits. For the intermittent machine problem, retain às vezes. “Nunca funciona” changes frequency and can make the recipient understand a different situation even though both phrases concern the same machine and both use negative wording.

Original example for practice

Cartão de revisão: Objeto: janela do quarto. Observação: não fecha. Início observado: ontem. Causa: desconhecida. Disponibilidade inicial: quarta-feira de manhã. Mensagem a melhorar: Está tudo avariado.

Writing task with an unexpected reply

Create a card with object, room, observed behaviour, start and request. Write a message and give it to a partner who proposes a different time. Accept or request an alternative, then note the arrangement and outstanding information. Review language clarity separately from faithfulness: an elegant sentence can still contain an unsupported diagnosis or commitment that neither participant actually made in the exchange.
