Short answer: identify what you are denying

“Não trabalho hoje” concerns today; “Nunca trabalho ao domingo” describes frequency in the context given. These are not equivalent statements. Identify the action, person and time period before choosing a negative word. A não can deny one specific detail without rejecting everything previously said in the conversation or claiming that an activity never occurs at any time in any setting.

This guide presents frequent patterns in simple sentences rather than every possible negative construction. The examples are invented. Someone who says they did not understand the time has not necessarily said they cannot understand Portuguese: they may have missed just one number. The specific detail being denied should remain clear when you retell the message to a partner.

Short answer: identify what you are denying
PortugueseMeaning
Não trabalho hoje.I am not working today.
Nunca trabalho ao domingo.I never work on Sundays.
Ainda não terminei.I have not finished yet.
Não conheço ninguém.I do not know anyone.
Ninguém respondeu.Nobody replied.
Não comprei nada.I did not buy anything.

Não before the verb: action and specific detail

Use “Não tenho tempo”, “Não percebi a pergunta” and “Não vou sair hoje”. In these examples, não precedes the main finite verb form in the construction. Correct a time with a contrast: “A aula não começa às nove; começa às dez”. This does not deny that the class exists; it rejects the first time and replaces it with another.

Compare “Não gosto de café” with “Hoje não quero café”. The first describes a dislike and the second a choice made today. A temporary refusal should not be treated as a permanent preference. In the dialogue, the listener corrects the detail without debating every possible situation. Practise the strategy again while changing only the day, time or location.

Original example for practice

— A aula começa às nove? — Não, não começa às nove. Começa às dez. — E é na sala dois? — Não. É na sala três.

Nunca and ainda não: frequency and something pending

“Nunca vou a essa loja” describes no visits in context; “Ainda não fui à loja” says the visit has not happened by the time being considered. The second may suggest an expectation, but does not itself confirm a future date. Do not add tomorrow as though the character had already promised to go then or supplied that information in the original statement.

Before the verb, nunca forms a negative without adding não: “Nunca chego cedo”. You can also encounter “Não chego cedo nunca” with nunca afterwards, although this guide favours the more direct first version. Start with short patterns and preserve the time interpretation: never does not merely mean that something has not happened today, so replacing the two can change the message.

Nada and ninguém: position in the sentence

Compare “Não comprei nada” with “Nada mudou”, and “Não conheço ninguém” with “Ninguém respondeu”. In these patterns, nada and ninguém after the verb accompany não; before the verb, no additional não is used. The two negative words in the first construction do not make the statement affirmative. Avoid transferring a rule from English without checking how the Portuguese sentence actually functions.

Nada refers to things or content in these examples; ninguém refers to people. If nobody replied, that does not say the question will never be answered. The negative concerns the event under discussion. Put each pair into two columns and identify who or what is being denied before practising word order or attempting to produce a more elaborate sentence.

Worked exercises: correct without changing meaning

Complete “Não conheço ___ nesta turma”: ninguém, because this refers to people. For “Não comprei ___”, nada is appropriate. Correct “Ninguém não respondeu” to “Ninguém respondeu” in this exercise’s simple pattern. Now change “Conheço uma pessoa nesta turma” to mean you know no one: “Não conheço ninguém nesta turma”. Keep the class reference rather than silently changing the setting or time period.

Read “Ainda não terminei o exercício”. Did the character confirm they will never finish it? No. Did they confirm they finished? Also no. It says the task is not finished yet. “Precisas de ajuda?” is a useful follow-up. Your interpretation should not invent an outcome or deadline absent from the original statement merely to make the exchange feel complete.

Original example for practice

Não conheço ninguém nesta turma. Ninguém respondeu à pergunta. Não comprei nada. Nada mudou. Ainda não terminei o exercício.

Speaking practice: deny, correct and clarify

One partner reads invented information such as a class at nine; the other has a card showing ten. Correct only the wrong detail and confirm the right one. Add a task not yet completed and a question about people. Swap cards. Check that the negative was understood and the rest of the information preserved, rather than treating every correction as rejection of the whole conversation.
