Short answer: outside conditions and personal sensation

“Está frio” describes outside conditions here; “Tenho frio” describes how someone feels. Both may be true together without being identical information. A character can feel cold where another person is comfortable. Do not turn a personal statement into an objective measurement or correct someone’s sensation merely because another participant feels hot. Identify whether the sentence concerns the environment or the person before choosing the verb.

The table gives useful expressions rather than Portugal’s climate or a current forecast. All example temperatures and times are fictional. For actual activities, consult current weather information and local conditions. This task studies forecast language without claiming that an invented value reflects the weather in a particular city or can be relied on for planning a real trip.

Short answer: outside conditions and personal sensation
PortugueseMeaning
Está frio.It is cold.
Tenho frio.I feel cold.
Está a chover.It is raining.
O céu está nublado. The sky is cloudy.
Há possibilidade de chuva. There is a possibility of rain.
A temperatura prevista é de doze graus. The forecast temperature is twelve degrees.

Rain, sunshine, wind and temperature

Chover gives chove, choveu and vai chover in the contexts shown. “Está a chover” highlights rain in progress. “Está sol” and “O céu está nublado” describe other conditions. Chuva is a noun, not a substitute for a verb: use “Há chuva prevista” or a form of chover according to the sentence you want to express rather than combining familiar words without checking their functions.

Read “doze graus” and identify the unit in the text. A bare number could be a time, temperature or another measure. The invented forecast specifies degrees Celsius; no conversion is needed here. Read location and period too: a morning value does not automatically apply to the afternoon or another city. The task checks the link between each number and its actual reference.

Original example for practice

Tempo exterior: Está frio. Está calor. Está vento. Está sol. O céu está nublado. Está a chover. Sensação pessoal: Tenho frio. Tenho calor. Outros momentos: Ontem choveu. Amanhã pode chover. No inverno, esta personagem costuma usar um casaco. Estes exemplos não descrevem o clima atual de um lugar.

Seasons and time markers: when is this happening?

Primavera, verão, outono and inverno name seasons. “No inverno” places a statement in that period but does not establish identical conditions every day. Hoje, amanhã, de manhã and à tarde can be more relevant in a conversation about meeting. Decide whether you are reading a habit, an observation or a forecast rather than treating every weather-related statement as a prediction.

Compare “No inverno uso um casaco” with “Hoje estou a usar um casaco”. One can describe a character’s habit, the other a current situation. Neither is a universal clothing recommendation. In this activity, clothing is a fictional choice that helps practise links between weather, preferences and plans. Other characters may choose differently without invalidating the grammatical description.

Read a forecast without removing its qualifications

The invented message describes a cloudy morning and a possibility of afternoon rain. Possibility does not confirm rain throughout the afternoon. Previsto identifies forecast information, not an observation that has already happened. Preserve these qualifiers in a summary instead of rewriting everything as “it will rain all day”. Correctly recognising chuva while losing its uncertainty still changes the message materially.

The dialogue proposes a walk and an indoor alternative. The alternative awaits agreement rather than constituting a second confirmed activity. Separate proposal, condition and final decision so you know whether a reply is still needed before recording the arrangement. Comprehension includes certainty and responsibility as well as recognising individual weather words or repeating the temperature correctly.

Original example for practice

A alternativa interior ainda depende dessa decisão.

Worked exercises: observation or forecast?

Use está in “Hoje ___ frio” and tenho in “Eu ___ frio”. For rain in progress, complete “Está a chover”. In the forecast, the morning temperature is twelve degrees and the afternoon has a possibility of rain. There is no basis for continuous rain or an exact night temperature. Missing information is part of the task rather than a gap you should fill with a plausible guess.

Someone says “Se chover, podemos ir à biblioteca”, but the partner has not replied. Is the indoor plan confirmed? No. Add a simple follow-up such as “Sim, combinamos amanhã de manhã”, explicitly as a new response. Do not present that agreement as though it were already contained in the conditional proposal, which merely opens a possibility for the next conversational turn.

Original example for practice

1. Hoje ___ frio. 2. Eu ___ frio. 3.

Production: an invented forecast and a decision

Make morning and afternoon cards with conditions, temperature and certainty. A partner summarises without seeing the text and proposes an activity; the other confirms or changes it. Check whether the summary retains the period and probability. Change one detail and update the plan. Responding to new information is the goal, not repeating a memorised description after its underlying facts have changed.

CEFR and Camões support the framework; forecasts, dialogues and answers here are fictional editorial materials, not weather bulletins or official CIPLE tasks. An actual decision needs current information suitable for the location rather than the invented conditions in our practice scene.
