Everyday Portuguese A2
Portuguese comparatives: more, less and as
Compare with “Este quarto é mais pequeno do que aquele” — “This room is smaller than that one”, or “Esta sala é tão clara como a outra” — “This room is as bright as the other”. Identify both options and the characteristic. The original exercises below also practise melhor and pior.

Short answer: two options and a characteristic
A comparison needs a reference. “É mais barato” can work when both people already know the other option; on its own, it leaves something unspecified. This guide names the options to make the reasoning visible. Compare one characteristic at a time: price, distance, size or another property the exercise actually supplies rather than assuming every possible feature is known.
The best option for a character is not necessarily the cheapest or nearest. Choice depends on the criterion. The situations and values are invented and do not recommend actual products, accommodation or routes. The aim is to understand the relationship expressed and explain which conclusions the comparison permits without extending it to information that has not been supplied.
| Portuguese | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Esta sala é mais clara do que a outra. | This room is brighter than the other. |
| Esta opção é menos cara. | This option is less expensive. |
| Esta sala é tão clara como a outra. | This room is as bright as the other. |
| Este texto está melhor. | This text is better now. |
| O som está pior do que ontem. | The sound is worse than yesterday. |
| O percurso A demora menos tempo. | Route A takes less time. |
Mais and menos: more and less
“A sala A é mais clara do que a sala B” compares brightness. “A sala B é menos clara do que a sala A” gives the same relationship from the other side. You will also encounter que without do in this type of comparison; these models consistently use do que. Do not memorise room A as always being the superior option regardless of the description.
An adjective that varies agrees with its reference: “O quarto é mais pequeno” and “A sala é mais pequena”. Mais stays the same, while pequeno changes in these examples. Menos also stays unchanged: “menos cara”, not menas. Read the whole sentence before correcting it because the agreement that matters is not necessarily in the word directly expressing comparison.
Original example for practice
A sala A é mais clara do que a sala B. A sala B é menos clara do que a sala A. O quarto é mais pequeno. A sala é mais pequena.
Tão como: equality in one characteristic
“Esta sala é tão clara como a outra” compares the rooms as equally bright. It does not make them equal in size, price or location. Tão accompanies an adjective or adverb here. Quantities use another construction: “Tenho tantos livros como a Ana” has tantos with a noun. Do not exchange tão and tantos merely because their English translations appear related in the examples.
Start with two cards that state the same characteristic. Change only that property on one card and see whether equality remains true. “Tão perto” compares distance in context; “tão cedo” compares a time or temporal performance. Neither establishes complete equality between two activities, spaces or people in every possible dimension, so do not add that conclusion to the exercise answer.
Melhor and pior: make the quality criterion clear
For bom and mau, use melhor and pior in these examples: “Este texto está melhor do que o primeiro” and “O som está pior do que ontem”. Avoid mais bom and mais mau in this simple comparison exercise. Explain the criterion: the text’s instructions are clearer; in the sound recording, words are harder to hear. That makes the comparison useful to another reader.
Melhor alone does not specify what improved. An opinion needs context to guide study. Instead of simply saying your Portuguese is worse, identify a concrete task and compare two similar attempts. A difficulty on one particular day should not become a conclusion about every skill or a prediction of an examination outcome without any comparable evidence for such a broad judgement.
Worked exercise: read the data before comparing
Two invented route cards show ten minutes for A and fifteen for B. Which is shorter in time? A. Can we conclude A is physically nearer? Not from these figures alone: transport and speed could differ. A suitable statement is “O percurso A demora menos tempo do que o B”. Keep the comparison within what the information actually establishes rather than adding a geographical assumption.
Complete “A sala A é ___ clara ___ a B” when both have equal brightness in the drawing: tão and como. Correct “Esta opção é menas cara” to menos cara. State the criterion aloud when evaluating a choice. Different replies can be coherent if they explicitly use different criteria and those criteria are supported by the information given in the task.
Original example for practice
Cartões fictícios: Percurso A: 10 minutos. Percurso B: 15 minutos. O percurso A demora menos tempo do que o B. Não sabemos a distância em metros.
Choose an option and explain why
Create two cards with a fictional price, duration and character preference. Make three comparisons and one justified choice. The cheapest option does not have to win. Ask your partner to repeat the criterion and check the numbers without adding features absent from the cards. Swap information and repeat with a new decision so that the answer depends on the changed situation.
Continue with gostar de and preferir to express choices, and clothes shopping to compare sizes in context. The A2 learning path includes other areas of practice.
