Everyday Portuguese A2
Fui, estive, tive and fiz: Portuguese past tense explained
Fui can be the past of ir or ser: “Fui ao mercado” means “I went to the market”; “Fui o primeiro a chegar” means “I was the first to arrive”. Estive comes from estar, tive from ter and fiz from fazer. Choose by the action and complement, not a word-for-word English translation.

Short answer: choose from the whole sentence
“Ontem fui ao mercado” describes movement; “Fui o primeiro a chegar” identifies someone’s position in an event. Fui has the same spelling, but context distinguishes the verbs and meanings. Nothing inside that single word resolves the ambiguity on its own. Read what precedes and follows it rather than guessing that every fui must describe going somewhere or every English was must translate the same way.
Estive locates a presence or state within a period; tive expresses possession or an experience here; fiz expresses an action performed. The pretérito perfeito presents these events as bounded in context. This selection does not explain every past tense or replace a separate study of the imperfect. Begin with completed situations introduced by yesterday or an invented date.
| Portuguese | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Fui ao mercado. | I went to the market. |
| Fui o primeiro a chegar. | I was the first to arrive. |
| Estive na biblioteca. | I was at the library. |
| Tive uma reunião. | I had a meeting. |
| Fiz o exercício. | I did the exercise. |
| Nós fomos à escola. | We went to school. |
Reference forms: person and verb
The reference below gives frequent first- and third-person forms plus nós. Ir and ser share these pretérito perfeito forms. Agreement still matters: nós fomos, eles foram; nós estivemos, eles estiveram. A regular ending alone cannot identify the infinitive you need. Make a small reference card for each verb rather than trying to derive all of them from the falar pattern.
Attach a sentence to each row: fomos ao mercado, estivemos na escola, tivemos uma reunião, fizemos o exercício. These people need not have done everything on one day. The reference is a list of forms, not a narrative establishing a sequence. If you create a story, make the order explicit with depois or mais tarde instead of assuming the table provides it.
Original example for practice
IR / SER eu fui · tu foste · ele/ela foi · nós fomos · eles/elas foram ESTAR eu estive · tu estiveste · ele/ela esteve · nós estivemos · eles/elas estiveram TER eu tive · tu tiveste · ele/ela teve · nós tivemos · eles/elas tiveram FAZER eu fiz · tu fizeste · ele/ela fez · nós fizemos · eles/elas fizeram
Ir and estar: movement and presence
“Fui à biblioteca” highlights going there; “Estive na biblioteca” highlights being there during the period discussed. Both may be true of the same day without being exact equivalents. The first does not tell us how long the person stayed; the second does not say how they travelled. Do not add either as an automatic conclusion just because the location is identical in both examples.
Notice the combinations: ir a plus an article can give à or ao; estar em plus an article can give na or no. These are concrete sentence patterns rather than a claim that every movement requires one preposition. Ask “Quanto tempo estiveste lá?” for missing duration or “Como foste?” for transport, choosing the question according to the detail you actually need.
Ter and fazer: experience, possession and a task
“Tive uma reunião” describes an experience or appointment that took place; “Tive tempo para estudar” concerns time available in that context. “Fiz o exercício” states that a task was done, not that every answer was correct. It reports an action rather than a grade. That distinction matters when deciding what someone’s message has genuinely confirmed and what still needs checking.
Compare “Fiz o exercício” with “Não fiz o exercício”. The negative retains fiz and changes the assertion. “Ainda não fiz” frames the task as not done yet. It does not establish a promise for tomorrow without another statement. Ask about the plan if the conversation needs a future decision rather than treating an incomplete task as evidence of a specific commitment.
Original example for practice
Relato original: Ontem fui à biblioteca depois do almoço. Estive lá durante uma hora e fiz um exercício de leitura. Depois tive uma reunião com uma colega. Falámos sobre um trabalho e combinámos outra conversa para a semana seguinte. À noite, não fui ao cinema. Fiquei em casa e li um pouco. Não sabemos a hora a que entrei na biblioteca nem o resultado do exercício.
Exercises with a key: identify the infinitive
The answers below are: 1 fui from ir; 2 estive from estar; 3 tive from ter; 4 fiz from fazer; 5 fomos from ir; 6 foram from ser. In item six, “os primeiros” identifies the people in the event rather than naming a destination. Explain that complement before deciding which infinitive the identical surface form belongs to in this particular sentence.
The story says the character completed an exercise and had a meeting. We do not know whether the meeting went well or the exercise answers were correct. A library stay of one hour is supplied, but no arrival time. Preserve the stated information and identify what still requires a question. This checks reading comprehension as well as the ability to recognise or complete an irregular verb form.
Original example for practice
1. Ontem ___ ao mercado. (eu / ir) 2. ___ na escola durante uma hora. (eu / estar) 3. ___ uma reunião. (eu / ter) 4. ___ o exercício de leitura. (eu / fazer) 5. ___ à biblioteca. (nós / ir) 6. Eles ___ os primeiros a chegar. (ser) Perguntas de compreensão: Quanto tempo durou a presença na biblioteca? Sabemos a hora de entrada? Fazer um exercício confirma que todas as respostas estavam certas?
Write a story and check its meaning
Describe an invented day with a journey, a stay, an experience and a task. Use four short sentences, mark their order and review each verb: who, when, what and where. Ask a partner to identify the infinitives without seeing your original list. If fui remains ambiguous, supply enough context to distinguish your intended meaning rather than assuming the reader can reconstruct missing details.
The yesterday guide supports narrative organisation; ser and estar reviews identification and state. Continue across other skills in the A2 path. They are not an official CIPLE topic inventory, and completing this set does not establish mastery of all Portuguese past tenses.
The CEFR describes A2 as simple, direct communication in routine tasks on familiar matters and simple descriptions of personal background and immediate needs.
