AIMA application pending: check the status, distinguish queues and prepare your next step
A pending AIMA application needs a procedure-specific check and a review of your last official message. An announcement that 98% of one backlog was resolved does not establish the outcome of your own renewal or family-reunification request.

Short answer
On 12 October 2026, the Government reported 98% of the backlog handled by the mission structure resolved, referring to about 445,000 manifestations of interest and roughly 5,000 still unfinished.
What does the claim that 98% of the backlog was resolved mean?
The Government published its communication on 12 October 2026 about results presented at a hearing on 7 October. Keep the figure attached to the population described by the source: the portfolio handled by the mission structure, with reference to manifestations of interest. Resolved should not automatically be translated as residence granted. Nor does the number establish that your application belongs to the unfinished remainder. To determine the relevance to your case, identify the application route, reference and actual communications rather than inferring a personal outcome from a national percentage.

Old MI case, residence renewal or family reunification: which queue?
Start with the original submission evidence. Identify the procedure name and recipient authority, rather than relying on the generic phrase AIMA process. The table separates situations that are often confused. Do not treat a historical manifestation of interest as a new route open for applications, or assume renewal of an existing card is the same as an initial grant. For a family member, distinguish family reunification from an EU-citizen family procedure. Use the specific guides to make this distinction before contacting the service or comparing the waiting time with another applicant’s.

How can you prepare an AIMA application-status enquiry?
Open the official channel appropriate to your procedure and keep the application reference available. If the case uses a portal, first review the notices and documents associated with it. For an enquiry, state the procedure, submission date and latest communication received. This organisation is editorial advice, not a universal sequence of buttons guaranteed across every regime. Avoid sending unnecessary personal documents or creating duplicate residence applications simply to ask for an update. A focused message helps distinguish an access problem from a case still awaiting examination, without promising a response time.
Official renewal eligibility channel; it does not cover every queue.
Is your renewal pending, or is your residence card about to expire?
First check the printed expiry and document category. The Renewals Portal opens for specified periods, which may differ from old news still appearing in search results. Read the current landing page and choose the channel matching your permit. Being able to enter a portal, holding a payment reference or completing a draft does not itself establish a favourable decision. For a submitted request, organise the actual submission evidence and subsequent communications. Our renewal guide separately explains residence rights, document evidence and the limits of making travel assumptions from a pending application.
On 26 October 2026, AIMA’s portal accepts renewals of permits expiring after 1 July 2025 and through 31 January 2027; later expiry dates must await a further opening.
The portal lists ARI expired from 22 February 2020 to 31 January 2027 separately and directs non-ARI renewals expired between 22 February 2020 and 30 June 2025 to services.aima.gov.pt.
Did AIMA request documents, or did you read a general announcement?
Read the entire message addressed to your case and preserve the date received. Check the sender and open the portal through the official link, especially before paying or sending identification. A public communication about delays does not replace an individual notice. If your notice requires a response, identify the document or clarification requested and the deadline stated in that communication. This guide does not invent the same deadline for every application. Where you do not understand the effect of a decision or hearing notice, seek individual clarification and preserve the original document unchanged.
A useful enquiry structure and a timeline for your records
Build a simple timeline covering submission, payment where applicable, appointment, additional requests and your replies. An editorial enquiry structure is: procedure and reference; date of the last step; specific question; clarification sought. For example, ask which channel to use for a requested document rather than demanding an approval date based on a general announcement. Insert your personal details only in the appropriate official contact. Do not publish identity-document numbers, passwords or full notices in public comments or our contact form. Keep the official reply alongside your submission evidence so later messages remain understandable.
Does delay mean automatic approval or permission to travel?
Do not infer a grant from silence or a news item about backlog reduction. The September legal change identified in our renewal guide requires particular care with that assumption. A reference, receipt and card serve different purposes; evidence of an application inside Portugal is not automatically accepted by every carrier or foreign authority. Before travelling, check the conditions for your actual documents and itinerary. This article neither confirms an individual’s travel permission nor sets one universal legal decision deadline. Use the linked legal guide rather than an isolated statement circulating in a discussion group.
Confirmed by official source
Law 62/2026 repealed Article 82(7), the renewal provision on approval in the absence of a decision. This does not mean every special tacit-approval regime was repealed.
What if the issue concerns nationality, a language certificate or your address?
Nationality tracking belongs to IRN and should not be approached as an AIMA renewal. CIPLE results likewise belong with CAPLE and the exam LAPE. If an AIMA problem concerns your address or accommodation evidence, read those specific guides before sending a general question. For general help, our form at the end can receive the procedure type and your question without confidential case records. This independent project does not access your AIMA account, does not need your password and cannot promise to accelerate a decision. Choosing the right authority is the first useful step.
Official sources support the stated legal, language and certification facts. Plans, examples and checklists are independent editorial suggestions, not instructions from an authority.
