Short answer
Article 88(8) allows a work-permit holder to change employer by notifying AIMA, without a new card. Article 89(6) also allows notification of a change in the nature of self-employed activity without a new card.
Can you change employer without a new residence card?
Begin with your permit category and the nature of the change. Changing an employer is not necessarily switching from employment to self-employment. The law expressly addresses the situations in the card below. Dispensing with a new card does not remove the stated notification, and does not establish that every special permit category follows the same procedure.
Read the corresponding article rather than only a headline about freedom to change work. If your permit was issued for study, a particular European category or another basis, do not assume inclusion simply because it also permits some professional activity.

How to use this guide
Category
Identify the provision governing the permit before relying on the amendment.
Change
Distinguish a new employer, a changed activity and a different residence category.
Notification
Verify the official channel; we do not invent an unconfirmed form option.
Other duties
The residence rule does not automatically resolve every employment or tax formality.
Confirmed by official source
Article 88(8) allows a work-permit holder to change employer by notifying AIMA, without a new card. Article 89(6) also allows notification of a change in the nature of self-employed activity without a new card.
Write down what ends, what begins and the current permit’s legal basis. Separate changing employer, changing the nature of self-employment and potentially changing residence category. This brief diagnosis helps prevent a generic question receiving an answer intended for a different situation. Do not change your description simply to fit an available form option.
For a consultation, organise permit identification, relevant dates and evidence of the professional relationship. This is editorial preparation: it is not an official complete attachment list or an instruction to upload every document without an applicable submission requirement.
How to notify the change: AIMA channel still under review
The legal notification rule is confirmed; a sufficiently specific operational instruction remains under review. We do not invent a menu option, address or submission deadline to fill that gap. A general contact form receiving messages does not by itself establish that it is the correct channel for complying with the amended provision.
Check the official source for the appropriate subject and submission evidence in your situation, and keep the guidance received. Review status describes the limits of this verification, not a claim that AIMA has never published instructions or that compliance is impossible.
This does not replace renewal or create regularisation
Changing work does not automatically resolve an expired card, pending renewal or absence of a residence title. Where several issues exist, address each on its own legal basis. The former manifestação de interesse route should not be advertised as reopened by a provision enabling covered permit holders to change employer.
A file may contain evidence serving different purposes. Identify which document demonstrates residence, which establishes the employment relationship and which proves notification. That helps answer requests for clarification without claiming rights that the documents themselves do not establish.
Example: a new contract within the same permit category
Suppose you hold a covered employment authorisation and receive another company’s offer. Check the relevant article, organise evidence of the change and establish the notification channel. Do not assume that a different company necessarily requires a replacement card, or that the absence of that requirement removes notification.
If the proposal involves self-employment or a special category, stop the comparison there and check the specific provision. Similar economic activities need not receive identical administrative treatment, and the distinction should be resolved before relying on another employee’s experience.
After delivery: keep evidence and follow replies
Retain the instructions followed, message, submitted documents and delivery confirmation. An automated reply does not decide every employment, tax or residence consequence. Respond to requests for information with the existing reference, and avoid promising an employer a validation date the authority has not supplied.
This guide tracks the residence provision and identified operational gap. Contracts, contributions and other professional obligations have their own frameworks; notifying AIMA should not be presented as a universal substitute for all those steps or as evidence that unrelated formalities were completed.
